Sony’s AI adds drum sound to existing songs with a more than acceptable result.
Artificial Intelligence and music don’t seem like the best combination at first glance. But if you go a little deeper into the relationships between these disciplines, you can see ties between them. Music is rhythms, melodies, times. In short, it has a lot to do with numbers, with pauses and continuations. A language that is not difficult to translate into the language that machines speak.
So much so that there are examples of algorithms capable of composing their own melodies. Of course, inspired by pre-existing masterpieces, created by geniuses such as Mozart or Beethoven. But this is also what humans usually do. Take note of what exists and try to improve or transform it.
But it is not necessary to reach pure creation for artificial intelligence to have a space in the music sector. The customization of our favorite song lists is mediated by algorithms and there are also AI to accompany existing melodies.
The latter has been dedicated to Sony’s AI, which in its case puts the sound of the drums.
During an investigation, a team of company scientists developed AI software that can fill a song with drums. He has trained with 665 pop, rock and hip hop songs. From this knowledge, the algorithm calculates what the rhythm of the drums should be like when presented with a real song that lacks that instrument.
Accompany the music created
Sony AI is ready only to accompany with the drums a song. It does so flawlessly, without making it possible for the unholy ear to differentiate between artificial sound and the work of a professional.
Those responsible for the project had to make some adjustments to the system to improve the sound. In this way, the algorithm could level your “punches” to the “boxes” and the “bass drum” so that they were in line with the song.
The result of the work done by this Artificial Intelligence –rather by its creators, who ultimately are the ones who have the merit– can be heard on the project page.
