The task force is now led by Brent Insko, Lead Software Architect of Intel’s Virtual Reality Group.

GDC 2019, which will take place from March 18 to 22, will bring us news about the standard OpenXR working on the main companies in the VR and AR industry, as commented Brent Insko of Intel, the new person in charge of the task force, who picked up the witness of Nick Whiting of Epic Games at the end of last year.

In a statement to RoadToVR about this change in the group’s chairmanship, Whiting comments:

“I am honored to have had the opportunity to serve as chair of the Khronos OpenXR working group for just two years. In undertaking a series of new initiatives at Epic Games, I saw a clear opportunity to pass the baton, and the group chose Intel’s Brent Insko as the new president when he showed up to answer the call. The specification is in good hands with Brent and the OpenXR working group, and Epic remains as committed to the standard as ever. We continue to actively participate in all of the working group’s online and in-person meetings and, of course, continue to work to add OpenXR support to Unreal Engine 4.”

Insko highlights the opportunity to help push the standard toward its first release, plus the initiative’s 30 + members continue to work “fervently” to create that specification that eliminates the major complications of writing virtual and augmented reality applications for any viewer or platform.

The working group already showed in August last year the famous Epic Showdown demo running with OpenXR on StarVR and Windows MR viewers, so it is expected that since then they have made great strides to release this standard that will simplify development by implementing a single API. The same Oculus already told us that” probably ” this year there would be news about the implementation of the standard, so on March 19 (the Khronos Developer Day) we will know more.
