Pimax will hold face-to-face meetings with the backers during the month of August, where he will show them the M2, the improved version of the Pimax 8K M1, to get their feedback.

Pimax has been working on an improved version of the M1 version of their Pimax 8k, the M2, which they will take to their backers during the month of August. What they intend to do during these meetings is:

  • Demonstrations of the potential of 8k with graphics cards and recommended games.
  • Compare the 8k with other viewers.
  • Show how to use PiTool to get the best experience.
  • Collect requests and suggestions.
  • Offer face-to-face answers.

When the time and place of the matches are confirmed, they will announce them through their Kickstarter.

They have also shown us a list of interesting issues for backers to keep in mind:

1. Performance:

Performance has improved by 30% to 40% for new games, including Unreal 4.18 or higher, most games with Unity and Oculus 1.17 or higher. They will share a list with the games they have tested later.

Although the GTX 1070 is the minimum card to run the 8k, we will not be able to reach the full potential of the viewfinder with this card.

We have integrated different FOV options into PiTool, so that users can choose. Users of a 1070 would have to choose a smaller FOV.

With a GTX 1070, the Pimax 5K performs better than the 8K. For those who do not plan to upgrade their graphics cards, we will give them options to exchange their 8K for 5K and accessories.

2. Distortions at the edge of the field of view

With a large FOV, it’s hard to find an algorithm that solves everything.

Distortion would be the result of many factors, including different FOV options, IPD, nearsightedness / farsightedness and the different distance between the eyes and lenses. This is not a problem with small FOV viewers, but with large FOV viewers.

With the latest version of PiTool .61, we have significantly improved the lens correction profiles. Previously, the equipment could only measure up to 120 degrees, engineers rely on subjective estimates to correct distortions beyond the FOV range of 120.

Now we have a new equipment supporting 190 FOV test, which will definitely help engineers to test and correct the distortions on the edge, the accuracy will be greatly improved.

In addition, we plan to offer several configurations for users to find their best option.

3. Consumer and UX software

We are working with testers to speed up iterations, we have solved most of the problems identified by the testers.

When the key issues are resolved, we plan to allocate more resources to improve UX / UI, and share the improved PiTool with you, to collect feedback and localization support. We plan to open UX/UI/Localization projects to the community and provide rewards for major contributors. We believe that the UX / UI will be greatly improved, with the time and efforts of the Pimax team and the community.

As business customers do not require perfect software / UX, and usually only adopt one type of PC for each scenario, we can already meet your expectations. We have received enough orders and reached a consensus with our customers:

“Backers come first, business customers come second.”

With this we will go ahead with mass production, if some backers prefer to wait until the maturity of the software, we can continue to deliver the prepared units to commercial customers.
