The application makes available to the user an immersive directory to navigate through experiences located on the Internet.
The startup Supermedium, which belongs to the Y Combinator incubation program and which was founded by members of the MozillaVR team, has received a round of funding from $ 1.1 million (reported by TechCrunch) to boost your WebVR content browser with immersive directory, which is available since February for free for Rift, Vive and Windows MR. Y Combinator, General Catalyst, Boost VC, Anorak Ventures, Candela Partners, Social Stars, M Ventures, Seraph Group, Taimatsu, Outpost VC, Colopl Next, Shrug VC, Andrew Ogawa and Cantos VC have participated in the round.
With WebVR, unlike a traditional content platform (like Steam), applications are hosted like any web page, so users access content through a URL. The company sees the move to the web as inevitable, and so they are preparing for their user base to continue to grow. As they share, most of the use of the app still comes from people trying to find an easy way to navigate through adult VR content.
Currently Supermedium’s focus is towards experiences with absolute positioning for the viewer and controllers, thus leaving aside mobile devices such as Oculus Go and Gear VR. A bet that, they claim, will only reduce their user base in the short term, as they expect the major companies to gradually start betting on autonomous viewers with 6dof.
Last month they launched Supercraft, a WebVR application that makes it easy to create virtual worlds and share them via a web address.
