London The British company Dyson, known above all for its vacuum cleaners, wants to expand its business with an unusual innovation: a pair of headphones linked to a personal air filter. The device presented on Wednesday has a distinctive temple in front of the mouth and nose, through which purified air is supplied. The filter headphones with the name Dyson Zone should be launched in the fall, a price was not mentioned at first.

Electrostatic filtering is designed to trap up to 99 percent of particles up to 0.1 microns in size, such as dust, pollen and bacteria, Dyson explained. The carbon filter enriched with potassium should purify the breathing air of city gases such as nitrogen dioxide and ozone. An additional “face cover attachment” is also intended to ensure filtering according to the FFP2 filtering standard. There was no information on the battery life and the weight of the Dyson Zone at first.

According to Dyson, the device was developed over a period of six years and builds on the company’s experience with airflow and filter technologies. Dyson is also active in the business of hair dryers and air filters for interiors. A few years ago, the company invested several billion pounds in the development of an electric car, but abandoned the project even before the market launch.

Dyson placed the compressors with two motors each for the air supply in the ear cups of the headphones, thanks to noise cancellation, this should not affect the listening experience. The device was developed with the help of more than 500 prototypes, starting with a version with a mouthpiece and a backpack for the engine and other equipment.
