Sung-Hoon Hong, vice president of Samsung, commented at the recent Summit in California that they are working on the next Gear VR and a new Hololens-type mixed reality device.
During the recent virtual Reality Summit held in California, Samsung Vice President Sung-Hoon Hong held a talk entitled “The future of Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality, and Samsung’s new challenges”, in which Hong commented that they are working on a light field technology that can produce really real holograms. “It looks like you can touch them,” Hong pointed out.
In the talk Hong also added that they are considering working with other companies. In fact, he talked about Magic Leap, but without mentioning any concrete agreements. This situation is not strange for Samsung, because to develop Gear VR they partnered with Oculus. During the talk it was also announced that they will launch a Daydream-compatible phone.
The launch of a new mixed reality viewer by Samsung could bring this type of device closer to the general public, since at the moment only the developer version of Hololens is available. We will have to wait for the Mobile World Congress 2017, which will take place in Barcelona from February 27, to know more details about this new mixed reality device.
The new version of Gear VR will be presented soon and, at the moment, there is no more information about whether it will implement some kind of absolute positioning or some other feature.
