Oculus continues to improve SDK performance

While we are still waiting for a new version of the Oculus SDK as of May, we are getting news about the progress of Oculus VR in this regard, although for the moment it seems that we will have to keep waiting. Chris Taylor, one of the Oculus programmers who usually drops information by droppers on Twitter, has commented briefly (it could not be otherwise) what they are working on.

Weeks of working on core SDK render code. Some great wins but still a ways off from releasing anything. Nothing to announce yet.

– Chris A Taylor (@oculuscat) December 1, 2014

Apparently, they have been working on the core of the SDK render for weeks and have already achieved important improvements, which could translate into less performance loss when activating the Oculus Rift mode. The bad news is that there is still time for them to launch it and they have nothing to announce at the moment, which may mean two things: either we will see a minor SDK update coming soon and the changes are left for the next one, or Oculus probably won’t update the SDK until it has everything implemented, so it is more than likely that we will say goodbye to the year with 0.4.3.

The current version of the SDK has meant a very important improvement in headtracking latency, although it also introduced some performance problems in Unity that, fortunately, have already been solved with a small update. In any case, and despite having improved considerably, the direct mode continues to be the pending subject, and we hope that for 0.4.4 Oculus will give a blow to the table in this regard.
