Under the direction of Jim Ryan, PlayStation has been very clear in its future strategy: to expand its IPs to other horizons beyond video games. The company is developing a variety of series and films from its most popular franchises and today one more is added to the list – Gravity Rush.
Deadline reported that PlayStation Productions is working with Scott Free Productions (Ridley Scott’s production company) to start the development of a movie of Gravity Rush, an action-adventure title released for PS Vita in 2012. The film will be directed by Anna Mastro, who will be based on a script written by Emily Jerome.
Gravity Rush, developed by Japan Studio, focuses on Kat, a girl who wakes up with severe amnesia somewhere in the floating city of Hakseville. After receiving the power to control gravity from a mysterious black cat, Kat uses her newfound strength to safeguard the citizens from the fearsome gravity storms and the evil monsters known as Nevi. The title received a PS4 remaster and subsequently a sequel, Gravity Rush 2, which was released in 2017.
Anna Mastro has participated in series such as Secret Society of Second Born Royals, The Rookie, L.A.’s Finest, In the Dark, The Bold Type, Star, Runaways and UnREAL; while Emily Jerome rose to popularity for writing the script of Panopticon.
The Gravity Rush movie does not yet have a cast, much less a release date, but it shows that PlayStation is increasingly interested in starting to build a cinematic universe.
