In addition to the four founding members, Microsoft is also a member of the Bytecode Alliance, which was founded in 2019. In the future, the Manufacturers ‘ Alliance will be set up as a 501(c)(6) non-profit organization, ranking it at the level of a Chamber of Commerce under U.S. law.

The Bytecode Alliance wants to create new, secure software foundations based on standards such as WebAssembly and the WebAssembly System Interface (WASI). The vision is a WebAssembly ecosystem that fixes the breaks between existing software foundations. At the same time, attention is drawn to the inherent weaknesses of existing models for software creation.

The self-declared goal is to ensure greater security, efficiency and modularity across the widest possible range of devices and architectures. In the opinion of the members, this requires effective multi-stakeholder cooperation. The Alliance relies on an open governance model and a growing list of members.

To achieve the latter, the non-profit organization is now promoting membership: “Organizations that are passionate about this mission and want to create new, safer foundations for the cloud, the Edge, the Internet of Things and many other environments and platforms are invited to apply as members,” the invitation states.

According to Fastly, membership applications are checked continuously. However, all those companies that submit their application in the near future could already participate in the elections to the full Board in the second half of 2021.
