Being a child or young person and going to school today is not the same as 10-20 years ago. IT is constantly playing a bigger and bigger role-not just in school, but in general. Technological developments are exploding, giving a whole world full of new opportunities that were never thought possible before. For this reason, IT has also become a large part of the teaching at the Danish schools. Both at Primary School, HF High School, Business School and so on, but also at higher education.
For IT is not just something that is happening now. It seems to be the future, and it is hanging in to keep up with it. Therefore, it is of course important that IT is and becomes part of everyday tools in school. So students can be well equipped to be able to perform technically – and to move sensibly and considerately around the world of technology. Also, when they come out of elementary school and, for example, choose to continue at an HF high school or other secondary education.
Smart technology
But it’s also smart, all this IT. It can do a lot of good things, and it can make many things easier. And more fun. In the school context, as a teacher, you can supplement ordinary classroom instruction and books with information, assignments and other things on the web, which can give new perspectives. The smartboard has replaced the classic class board with chalk. Tasks are distributed and Solved / written via computer, information is found on the web/smartphone, networks are searched and managed via computer / smartphone… it is smart – and quite amazing in many contexts.
But the slightly older generations may have little tendency to shake their heads over all the technological developments. Those generations who have not grown up with a tablet or smartphone in hand. They may gasp a little and worry that some of the values they labeled as children may be lost. What about the sense of community? The personal contact instead of digital contact. Playing together outside in all kinds of weather instead of looking in a screen alone. Playing a board game together instead of a computer game. In short, the social perspective. But also other things like being challenged bodily / motor, which you do not become by playing and chatting on the web. To remember things – instead of letting a machine remember it all. But also, and not least, to disconnect.
IT and old values
Unfortunately, you often hear about young people who get stressed and feel pressured – and in some cases get sick. Sometimes it may be linked to having to be ”on” all the time. Both on social media, at school and elsewhere. It may seem that one should preferably be top-performing and perfect in both appearance and head all the time. At least, when one is ” on ” – to appear perfect. But when can you disconnect – if you are constantly ” on” and can almost panic if you do not have your smartphone in hand? Or not feeling good enough if you don’t get enough likes on social media?
It should preferably not be that way, whether you go to Primary School, HF High School, a higher education or something completely third. Or whether you live in Gentofte, Copenhagen, Lyngby or anywhere else in the country. So yes, IT and technological development have a lot of good with them and do a lot of good. But we must also remember to take care of old values that may prove to be of great importance to the social – and our well-being in general.
