The most resistant HTC Vive users already have a new challenge in this mod for Doom 3 BFG that allows playing at room scale and with motion controllers for weapons and flashlight.
Since the Oculus Kickstarter campaign, many have wished they could play Doom 3 in virtual reality. In principle, id Software and John Carmack were going to release an official version of the game as a gift with the first Oculus DK1S, however, the well-known problems between Oculus and Zenimax ended this agreement. It was a time of experimentation with virtual reality, and today it is unthinkable that a game with traditional movement and fast action like Doom 3 could be endorsed by Oculus, HTC or Sony. However, modding is another story, and the creators have free rein to adapt some titles to virtual reality and deliver them to the community with a bow and the warning “use it at your own risk”, as is the case at hand.
And so Doom 3 BFG has finally arrived on commercial devices. On the one hand, we have an old adaptation “caught with tweezers” that works with the commercial version of the Rift and is controlled with a gamepad, but the one we have today is much more interesting. This is RBDoom 3 BFG, developed for SteamVR and compatible with HTC Vive (in theory also with Oculus Touch). This adaptation allows us to play as we like, from sitting with a gamepad to moving around our room with the motion controllers, one for the flashlight and one for the weapon. For this we have several commands that we will have to activate from the game console or through its configuration file:
- r_seated (1 = sitting, 0 = standing)
- vr_aimLook (1= aiming with the view, 0 = aiming unlinked from the view)
- vr_forceGamepad (0= uses the motion controller, 1 ignores it)
- vr_knockbackScale (to scale the recoil effect when we take damage)
- vr_playerHeightCM (we enter our actual height in centimeters)
We can find many more options in the D3BFGVRConfig file.cfg to be created in the folder C:Usuarios[Nombre]Saved Gamesid SoftwareRBDOOM 3 BFGbase. We will be able to adjust the HDR, SSAO, SSGI, the scale of the resolution and others. By the way, it is highly recommended to disable vertical synchronization to avoid performance problems. The author has created this thread on Steam to receive comments and opinions, and if anyone dares to face this preliminary version of Doom 3 BFG, they can also tell us their impressions here.
