  • Binance and Lazio Rome are jointly testing the use of NFTs for ticketing for the 2022/23 season.

  • Debacles such as in the Champions League final should be prevented by counterfeit security.

  • Digital tickets come up with special goodies for cardholders.

After the admission to this year’s UEFA Champions League final led to catastrophic conditions around the stadium in Paris, the market-leading crypto exchange Binance now wants to test ticketing based on non-Fungible tokens (NFT) for the 2022/23 season in cooperation with the Italian football club Lazio Rome.

As can be seen from a corresponding message to Cointelegraph, Binance is convinced that the use of NFT tickets will ensure that both counterfeiting and the illegal resale of tickets are no longer possible, which means that admission to major sporting events such as football matches can be handled much more orderly. In addition, the NFT tickets should also bring other functionalities, so discounts for fan shops or food stalls could also be booked on them, and fans could also enjoy token gifts or other goodies from their favorite clubs.

As part of the cooperation with the Italian traditional club, the NFT tickets will be available for all Lazio home games next season. Marco Canigiani from the management of the Romans confirms that season ticket holders can retrieve their NFT tickets for free and use them as tickets for the Stadio Olimpico. As a small incentive, the digital tickets still come up with some special advantages.

Zoe Wei, Binance’s director of fan tokens, explains that ticketing is a completely new application for NFT and the Web3. Thus, blockchain-based tickets would not only be used in sports for a long time, but in the entertainment industry in general.

In May, UEFA had to fight massively with fake tickets at the Champions League final in Paris, which provided clear evidence that ticket systems are not yet mature even in 2022 to prevent such incidents. Perhaps blockchain and NFT could change this in the future.

Josh Katz, the CEO of YellowHeart, also recently highlighted the advantages of non-Fungible tokens (NFT) in the context of ticketing. In this way, the technology could prove the clear authenticity of tickets and offer secure protection against counterfeiters.
