Version 23.2 of CockroachDB expands the range of services of the database, with a special focus on migration and resiliency. Another focus of the update is on improved SQL compatibility.
The new development of the stored procedures in CockroachDB makes it possible to use the advantages of the distributed execution engine, which facilitates the parallel processing of large amounts of transaction data. In addition, the READ Committed isolation level has been introduced, which is currently in the preview phase. This feature is intended to improve compatibility with the standard isolation level of Postgres and other popular database systems such as Amazon Aurora, Oracle and SQL Server to facilitate the migration of applications with high concurrency requirements.
Version 23.2 also includes the new MOLT (Migrate Off Legacy Technology) Live Migration Service, which is aimed at flexibility in database migrations. This service is intended to make it possible to move data between different systems, including MySQL, Postgres and various configurations (self-hosted, dedicated or serverless) of CockroachDB. This is to avoid errors during the migration, aiming for a balance between downtime, latency and data integrity.
In addition, CockroachDB 23.2 addresses reliability in corporate infrastructures. The introduction of Physical Cluster Replication is aimed in particular at companies that are still following a legacy failover strategy and have distributed their environment to only two regions. This feature is designed to speed up the management of complete cluster failures while ensuring compliance with Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and Recovery Time Objective (RTO).
More information about CockroachDB 23.2 is available on the Cockroach Labs website.
