Austin tech billionaire Elon Musk has tweeted that he wants to buy British football club Manchester United. “I’m also buying Manchester United. You’re welcome“ ” the 51-year-old wrote on the social network on Wednesday night. When asked by another user, Musk replied that it was just a joke, he was not interested in buying a sports team.
In 2018, Musk came into the focus of the US Securities and Exchange Commission with the announcement on Twitter that he wanted to take Tesla off the stock exchange. The allegation of securities fraud was ultimately settled with a settlement. In doing so, Musk agreed to a settlement under which a lawyer will review all his Tesla-related tweets.
The latest tweets could also attract the attention of regulators. Manchester United is listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The club’s A-shares have fallen 10 per cent this year.
The market capitalization of the English record champion at the close of the stock exchange was 2.08 billion dollars. Manchester United did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The club is majority owned by the U.S. Glazer family. This is criticized by fans, as the team does not show the desired performance on the pitch. Some fans had therefore asked Musk to buy Manchester United instead of Twitter.
In the same Twitter thread, he had previously stated: “To be clear, I support the left half of the Republican Party and the right half of the Democratic Party!” Musk’s announcement about the possible purchase of the football club already garnered over 180,000 “likes” in the first hour and a half.
The Tesla BOSS is considered eccentric and unpredictable. For example, Musk is currently in a legal dispute with Twitter itself, because he wants to cancel the approximately $ 44 billion takeover of the short message service.
