The name of the still quite young project – Gitpod Inc. was founded only in 2020 – already suggests what it is about: development around Git/GitHub, “Pod” usually points to things like Kubernetes. As always with complex products from this sector, it may take a little time for the interested website visitor to understand what “roughly” means in practice.
A really short explanation is probably only for those who are already familiar with GitHub codespaces: Gitpod is direct competition with a very similar range of services, but wants to be faster and relies entirely on open source. So codespaces users who want to be less dependent on Microsoft should listen carefully.
