Wheeled platforms would translate movement into the VR experience and slow us down if we get close to an obstacle.
Google has published the patent (applied for in May of this year) of a possible RV locomotion system. With a design that is very reminiscent of that Jamie Hayneman, of The Mythbusters, tried to launch unsuccessfully through IndieGoGo. With a concept similar to that of Vortrex, I would use a series of skates that would work without the need for structure or harnesses to hold us.
Some sensors would measure the rotation of gears, generated by dragging small wheels on the ground to apply motion in VR, being able to even lock the axes to warn us of the proximity of an obstacle and automatically take us to a safe position to achieve the feeling of walking through an infinite space. They would be arranged along a platform divided into two parts that would be placed under the sole, connected by a flexible part that would allow greater firmness when stepping and would allow to adapt to shoes of different sizes.
It is difficult to judge the viability of the product without any functional model, using only the description offered by the document, although at first it may seem an unstable and risky solution, it is possible that Google has some answers to problems that a priori may seem obvious.
