During our visit to Gamescom 2018, we had the opportunity to gather some impressions about the new StarVR viewer with one of its partners.
During our last day of Gamescom we had the opportunity to meet Jan Wagner of Black Cell, which collaborates with Starburst making experiences for arcades like IMAX VR. As he told us, he has in his hands the visor StarVR One for two weeks (I did not have it in Cologne), so he has shared his experience so far. It highlights that it is a great evolution compared to the previous version, mainly by eye tracking and 90 Hz (the previous model had 60). Features that offer a better experience, not only because you can gain more performance by foveated, but also by improving interactions (eye-hand coordination) and the possibilities it opens for content.
StarVR One has a horizontal FOV of 210º, which is a big jump over what we currently have at home(around 90º). In this sense, Wagner points out that said FOV is not perfect because it has some distortion on its sides. A drawback that the company itself also shared in the past SIGGRAPH this year. This distortion is something that Pimax 8K is not spared, because the company itself published in its latest updates that they were improving the software to treat these lateral distortions.
Despite this, he was very happy with the experience it offers, and shared that the large increase of the FOV is a somewhat overhead feature when the game or app is well developed.
