Here is yet another guide to setting up birthday calendar on your iPhone. I’ve written about that topic before, where I told about how to easily create a birthday on every single contact in your phone book. The birthdays will also be nicely shown in the calendar, but unfortunately there will be no reminder (popup with info) on the day itself. That is, I have to manually check my calendar every day, and who exactly does that?
See previous article: remember birthdays with your iphone
On most other mobile phone brands, the calendar for the day itself appears on the front of the phone. That is, even if you do not get a popup, you will still see it and be reminded of it. I very much hope that this will be changed in the new update coming to Apple iPhone (ios5). They might also make an active front page where you have an overview of e-mail, calendar appointments, etc. just like on other phones.
Having forgotten enough birthdays, I thought that this would have to stop. I checked the internet through, and found a lot of apps that could remember me on my contacts ‘ birthdays. After trying a few, I found that it does not work optimally either. The programs require that they run in the background, so if it is shut down by mistake, there will be no reminder.
Finally I solved the problem and am satisfied with the final result. The solution I ended up with is not fast or automatic, but useful and really good when everything processed is made. I used my Hotmail account (you can also use Gmail), where I have created all my contacts birthdays in calendar manually. Then I set up my Hotmail account on my iPhone, and chose to sync the calendar only. It works perfectly, and can also be used for other than remembering birthdays. Another really good thing about this setup is that you can also set up the calendar on your girlfriend’s phone example, so she will also automatically get the same info on her phone. This solution can actually be used on all phones that can sync with Hotmail(or Gmail), and it will put online so that there is always backup of it. Unfortunately, there is a minus that I still miss to solve, would like it to tell how old the person will be (I could on my old Nokia phone). See instructions below…
1. Start by creating a Hotmail, Gmail account if you don’t already have one. Once done, log in and go to Calendar in the left corner (remember that this guide is for Hotmail).
2. As you can see in the picture below, I have 2 contacts who have a birthday in October. Remember that when you set up a calendar appointment and want to be reminded of it, you need to enable reminders when you make the appointment.
3. Now you need to set up your Hotmail on your iPhone, see this article: How to set up hotmail on your iPhone. Here you can choose to sync everything, or only your calendar. This is done by walking in “Settings“> “E-mail, contacts, calendar“> “Hotmail account”.
4. Now you’re almost done, you just need to make sure that your “Hotmail calendar“is added to your calendar in iPhone. This is done by walking in “Calendar“on your iPhone and then thick on “Calendars“up in the left corner. Here you can then choose which calendars to display, here your Hotmail calendar must of course be displayed. As you can see in the pictures below, it works and fits with what is in the picture above.
