LG is preparing a new SteamVR prototype with many improvements, which will be sent to developers in larger quantities.
LG he already surprised us in March, during the last GDC, with the presentation of his first prototype for SteamVR. They showed a system similar to HTC Vive that, although still rough, incorporated a screen resolution of 2560×1440, equal to that of Gear VR and higher than that of 2160×1200 of the current PC viewers. It also incorporated a visor that could be raised, to be able to look outside easily.
We were promised to reduce weight and improve visualization. They even said that they would raise the resolution of the device, so we wouldn’t be surprised by anything that was at least 2880×1440, like some Microsoft viewers. But, apart from assuring that they would take into account all the comments of the GDC people, it seems that the graphic improvements do not stay in the resolution, since now they comment that in the new kit, in addition, they will reduce the screendoor thanks to the new panels and lenses used. It looks like there will be other improvements as well.
This time LG will send its new ‘dev kits’ to many more developers. We will be attentive.
