Linux 5.8: the biggest update and support the Russian chipatala Solovyov | 14.08.2020
Linus Torvalds (Linus Torvalds), the Creator of the kernel most common free operating systems GNU/Linux, announced the release of the next update of the Linux kernel to version 5.8. Last
the release is notable not only because it was the biggest update for all time of existence of this OS family, but first adding support for Russian processor.
With the first stable release of the Linux kernel 5.8 Linus Torvalds introduced specialists in the it sector 02 Aug 2020 Its issue was made in full compliance with the schedule. According to experts,
work on the new version lasted two months: the premiere of version 5.7 was held on may 31, 2020, and in early June, developers have begun to assemble 5.8.
The Linux kernel 5.8 differs from all previous versions to the greatest number of innovations in the entire history of GNU/Linux. For example, the introduction was made 17 606 hotfix
prepared by a team comprising 2 081 developer from around the world.
As he wrote Linus Torvalds on the mailing list of the Linux kernel, which was made in mid-June 2020 version 5.8 contains 800 thousand new lines of code and more than 14 thousand of changed files that
approximately 20% of the total volume of core files.
At the moment the Linux kernel 5.8 is the leader in the number of changes as commits, and added the lines of code that belong to different subsystems.
So, changes were made in about 20% of the files stored in the repository with the core code (more than 16.2 thousand files). Of code was removed more than 489 thousand lines, and added a record number –
more than 1.04 million new lines, which is why their total number also increased significantly.
The final size of the 5.8 patch to the kernel has reached 65 MB. For comparison, the version is 5.7, it was 39 MB.
“I really didn’t expect this, but 5.8 is likely one of the greatest albums of all time”, – quotes the letter of Linpus Torvalds media.
New changes in Linux kernel support-related hardware (“hardware”), accounted for about 40% of the changes. Among them – the first in the history of Linux support
Russian processor. They became the chip Baikal-T1, produced by technology 28 nm company Baikal Electronics and released in late may 2015
In the configuration of the Baikal-T1 includes three Ethernet controller (two 1 GB and one 10 GB), memory controller DDR3-1600, support up to 8GB, PCIe Gen controller.3, the controller SATA revision 3.0 (6 Gbit),
the USB 2.0 controller. The processor is built on a 2-HaDarom 32 P5600, MIPS r5, clocked at up to 1.2 GHz. Built-in cache memory – 1 MB. The processor comes in the body HFCBGA-576 size 25×25
mm.
The total number of changes in Linux kernel relevant to Baikal-T1 has exceeded 40. They all also included in the preliminary Assembly 5.8-rc2 (Release Candidate), released 22 June 2020
Together with the Baikal T1 Linux 5.8 adds support for generic CPU architecture of the Loongson-2K (development of the Chinese Academy of Sciences), smartphone Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 and Samsung Galaxy S2 on the basis of
Android.
The source code of Linux 5.8 is now available for download on the portal kernel.org.
Plans on Linux 5.9 on the moment unknown.
