The mech genre, like all cockpit games, adapts like a charm to virtual reality, and the fifth installment of the classic Mechwarrior will be compatible with this technology.
The Mechwarrior saga, always closely linked to the PC world, has lived its pluses and minuses since the release of the first title in 1989. The graphic engine, with flat polygons and simple shading, placed us in the cockpit of these mechanical colossus to live intense battles in the games of that time. Subsequently, the saga made its first steps in the world of consoles and went on to offer online gaming, launching the fourth title in 2002 and remaining forgotten until 2013, at which time Mechwarrior Online arrived, a Free to Play title based on CryEngine that had a fairly acceptable reception.
However, for the fifth title, Piranha Games has decided to go back to the roots and focus on the single player mode, as the company plans to keep Mechwarrior Online for the multiplayer mode. Mechwarrior Mercenaries will run under Unreal Engine 4, an engine with full support for virtual reality devices, and Piranha Games President Russ Bullock has confirmed that the game is designed to be compatible with VR. We will see if the game manages to recover the greatness of the first titles, without a doubt being able to play in virtual reality will be a great incentive for many of us.
