Menlo Park The Facebook group Meta is making progress in the development of its Twitter competitor offer and wants to bring it to the public as soon as possible. Top manager Chris Cox demonstrated an early version of the app to employees at a company-wide switch on Thursday, as reported by the technology blog “The Verge” and the “Wall Street Journal”, among others. The application is based on Instagram and should also be compatible with decentralized Twitter alternatives such as Mastodon.
Cox reportedly called the app “our response on Twitter”. Among other things, Meta is hearing from public figures about the “interest in a platform guided by reason,” he said in a sidestep to the chaotic months on Twitter since the takeover by tech billionaire Elon Musk in October. They are talking to US TV star Oprah Winfrey and the Dalai Lama, among others, about using the new app.
From a screen recording published by “The Verge” it is clear that in the meta app, similar to Twitter, you can like, answer and repeat short posts for your own followers.
After the acquisition by Musk, various large advertisers migrated to Twitter because they were worried about the environment for their ads. There is also more attention to alternatives such as Mastodon or Bluesky. But Meta, with several billion already connected users on its platforms like Instagram, is seen as a potentially particularly strong rival for Twitter.
