Generally, generations of video game consoles have at least some degree of competitiveness between different brands. However, the console generation was atypical, as the PlayStation 4 trampled the Xbox One and the Nintendo Wii U, data that has just been corroborated by Microsoft.
As you remember, Microsoft is making the total acquisition of Activision Blizzard, but being a purchase of such magnitude, several regulatory entities in the world must approve it. One of them is the Administrative Council of Economic Competition in Brazil, which ensures that there is fair competition in the market. Well, Microsoft presented official public documentation to the CADE, and there it was revealed that the Xbox One did not sell even half as many units as the PS4 (via PC Mag).
“Sony surpassed Microsoft in terms of console sales and installation base, having sold more than twice as much as Xbox in the past generation.”
Recently, Sony revealed that it will no longer offer figures on the total sales of the PS4, so for historical effects, the legendary console was left with 117.2 million consoles sold. For its part, Microsoft stopped offering Xbox One sales numbers many years ago. Basically, although without official figures, it can be deduced that the Xbox One sold a maximum of 58.6 million units, although really the amount could have been much lower.
Nowadays, in the time of the PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch, things are very different and more competitive. However, Microsoft must remember very well the failure that was its previous console, to avoid making the same mistakes it made at the time.
