Another of the novelties revealed by Oculus VR at the Connect event last weekend has been Oculus Platform, the content store that will replace the current one, Oculus Share. At the moment, one of the conditions for publishing an application on Platform is that it be free. This platform will host content for Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR.
Oculus is working on Platform and will be online before the end of the year, ready for the launch of Samsung Gear VR. In addition, Oculus is going to publish the complete source code of some of the applications developed by them, such as Oculus Cinema and Oculus 360, for other developers to use as a learning source. It seems clear that, at this point, the great objective of Oculus is to extend its platform and not profit from the contents, and the strategy could not be more successful. We’ll see if all this changes after the release of the CV1, but for now Oculus is still focused on supporting the community in all aspects.
