Although the lack of announcements and information about the release date of the Oculus Rift CV1 gave us a hint, now we have almost the definitive confirmation that the launch will not arrive this year, at least not in large quantities.
We read in Gamasutra that at the last Facebook results conference, CFO David Wehner has confirmed that “Oculus is practically in the development phase, so it’s still too early to talk about a large volume of shipments”. That does not mean that there will not be any type of launch in 2015, and it reinforces the theory that we have already been talking about a few months ago that there could be a reduced first launch of the CV1 with a very limited circulation, surely for developers, so that they can finish testing their experiences in a final or practically final product. Although today a few have Crescent Bay prototypes, these are very specific cases and hand-assigned by Oculus.
So, everything indicates that HTC Vive will have all the free way to become the star product of this Christmas among the most enthusiastic gamers. We will see if Oculus makes any more movements throughout the year, but from what we have seen, it does not seem that the competition, which is now very real, is going to influence its plans too much.
