Find driver in code Oculus Quest confirmed March rumors about the new hardware Oculus.
Developed by virtual reality Gerald McAllister found an interesting file when viewing source code Oculus Quest: in “jedi-archive.bin” has instructions for a new, yet unknown controller virtual reality.
Code name “Jedi” is well known: in the documentation for developers in the network Facebook in March for a short time the text appeared, which mentioned the new virtual reality glasses “Oculus Del Mar” and “First Access Forum”. In one line of demonstration code described “the Controller of the Jedi for the Oculus Oculus Del Mar”.
The analysis of drivers: the structure Touch
The analysis of drivers shows that the driver has little to say: the basic structure and layout of the buttons don’t change depending on the data driver.
They say that the improved controller integrated motion sensors compared to today’s touch controllers. In addition, the touch tracking can work with 60 Hz, not 30 Hz, as before. Both together can lead to more rapid tracking of the controller.
Touch 2 with the best track fingers?
The source code also contains references to new tactile technology and analog tracking fingers using capacitive sensors built into the controller.
Upgrade for Oculus might make sense, especially when it comes to tracking fingers: the new controllers of virtual reality, such as Valve Index, recognize the movement of all five fingers almost continuously. Current models only notice whether the thumb and index finger separately on the controller or they are extended. The remaining three fingers are United into one.
However, Oculus have already integrated hand tracking with Oculus Quest to control without a controller. Tracking detects hands and fingers quickly and accurately, but the delay is still too high for VR games .
It would be interesting the combination of tracking hands and fingers without controller with controller as a tool.
But no thoughts control?
Then search for the driver gives the basic information: if it is relevant, it is not consistent with the theory that the code name “Jedi” is a reference to the newly acquired control with the idea of Facebook from CTRL-Labs.
Decoding brain signals based on artificial intelligence translates them into computer input. For example, you can move the mouse pointer to the left, thinking “left” is reminiscent of the power of the Jedi “Star wars.” It is expected that the technology will be launched in the next four to five years.
The controller of the Jedi, as specified in the driver, however, is a continuation of the current touch controller instead of the fundamental UI changes.
Oculus can combine both technologies: this would be consistent with the strategy according to which new device VR should be compatible with the old Oculus and that Touch should become the standard input for VR just as the mouse on a PC.
