The company plans to sell the unit, which produces cameras, lenses, binoculars and voice recorders. The buyer may be an investment Fund managed by Japan Industrial Partners (JIP),
who purchased Sony VAIO computer business.
Olympus explained that the business generates little revenue and it is difficult to compete in the market of digital cameras. Currently, the company focuses on producing medical equipment for
type endoscopes.
Hints about the sale surfaced last year, including from the lips of the General Director Yasuo Takeuchi.
June 24, 2020, the parties signed an agreement of intent, under which Olympus will give the Fund all shares of the unit, and it will cease to be part of the company. The final agreement of the parties
plan to draw until September 30. Financial details as well as the information about continuation or discontinuation of the products, were not disclosed.
To transfer the unit to a new owner by the end of this year, and at the time of negotiations, it will continue to operate as usual.
