Oracle aims to improve the competitiveness of Java SE, with faster Release cycles. The development environment JDK could be placed under the GPL.
Java SE quickly developed. So far, every two years, to be released major Updates for the Standard Edition (SE) of Java. However, the Oracle seems to be now not anymore. Mark Reinhold, chief architect of the Java Platform Group at Oracle, now in a Blog that the competitiveness of the platform will be endangered.

Java SE 9 is expected on 21 September. As of 2018, there will be every six months Features-Releases of Java SE. To be in March and released in September. In addition, Oracle wants to introduce so-called Update Releases, which are published every three months. In this rhythm Oracle will then publish security fixes, minor improvements, and bug fixes. Here are January, April, July and October are planned.
After Java SE is used especially in the case of a company, which is also longer support need cycles, will be published from September 2018, all three years of a Long-Term-Support Release. In order for the provider guarantees that this Release will be supported for at least three years.
What is not to change but, apparently, is the extent of the changes. “In this model, the total number of changes will remain the same, as it is today. What is changing, however, that there are more opportunities for them to deliver,” says Reinhold. The six months will be transparent Releases smaller than the major Feature Releases, and to implement, therefore, easier. Also, this reduces the need to port new Features in older versions, because the next Feature Release is always just six months.
“In order for Java to remain competitive, it is not enough that it will continue to be developed,” says Reinhold in the Blog. It had to be designed to go further and faster.
In addition, Oracle will appear to the further development of open. Starting with JDK 9, as Reinhold in an entry in the OpenJDK mailing list explains’ll OpenJDK under the GPLv2. Thus, the developer tool should be suitable for Cloud environments. Oracle will also continue to commercial Builds such as with the Java Flight Recorder and Mission Control under a license. First of all, it should give OpenJDK Builds for Linux, Builds for Mac OS and Windows are available.
There is also the possibility that Oracle also makes this a paid Feature Builds open-source is. The Oracle JDK and OpenJDK would be interchangeable.
This Opening is not entirely surprising. A few weeks ago, Oracle had been thinking aloud about to pass Java EE (Enterprise Edition) is an Open-Source Organ, such as the Apache Software Foundation. Faster development processes and more flexible licenses should be possible. In addition, should be optimized in a body outside of the bishierigen process, the security of Java.
