We present Pangenesis, a Minecraft-style sandbox that we can play for free, alone or in multiplayer, and build all kinds of worlds, dungeons and whose only limit is our imagination. The support for Oculus Rift is a huge incentive for lovers of this type of games in which we can unleash our creative capacity.
Pangenesis is a game that its creator, Ben Taylor, has been working on part-time for more than 2 years. It started as a small challenge to see if he was able to create his own 3D engine in C++/OpenGL and has been growing progressively until now. After receiving his DK2 a couple of weeks ago, he immediately started integrating the Oculus SDK and has decided to publish it in alpha form for anyone who wants to try it. Details such as models, textures, sounds, dialogue are still missing… but the base is there for anyone who wants to take a look at it. These are some of its features:
-
- Procedurally generated landscapes, dungeons and creatures
-
- Destructible terrain
-
- Powerful and flexible construction engine
-
- Random treasures
-
- System of reproduction of creatures based on DNA
-
- Multiplayer
To run it on our DK2, we will have to configure it in extended mode and launch the file ‘Pangenesis – VR mode.bat’, or activate the VR mode from the game options menu. For anyone who wants to take a look, this will help you get started:
-
- Open the inventory (E or pad above) and place the digging skill in a numbered slot on the bar
-
- Close the inventory and select the slot with the ability to dig (numeric keys, mouse wheel or bumpers of the controller
-
- Dig using the left mouse button or the right trigger
-
- Choose different digging modes using the right mouse button or the left trigger
