One always expects that the sites he visits the most, the most popular on the Internet, have very good cybersecurity. However, a few hours ago Reddit revealed that it has just suffered a hack.
Through an official publication, reddit explained that a few hours ago the company suffered an attack via a very sophisticated phishing campaign. This means that the criminal or group of criminals sent links to employees who seemed trustworthy and official, but in reality only tricked them to get their sensitive information or passwords. It was only enough for an employee to fall into the deception for the criminal(s) to gain limited access to reddit’s servers.
According to Reddit, the attacker gained access to some internal documents, code, as well as some internal dashboards and business systems of the company. This means that the hacker accessed limited contact information of hundreds of contacts and employees of the company (current and former), as well as limited information of advertisers. However, the primary systems, where most of the site and sensitive user information is hosted, did not appear to be affected.
The same employee who was deceived reported his mistake, so the security team responded quickly, removing the infiltrator’s access and starting an internal investigation. In this way, it seems that effectively all your information is kept safe, but the attack will serve as a harsh lesson for reddit.
“Our goal is to fully understand and prevent future incidents of this nature, and we will use this post to provide additional updates as we learn and are able to share more,” Reddit explained in the thread.
It should be remembered that this is not the first time that Reddit has been hacked, because 5 years ago another hacker managed to access personal information of its users. Apparently that accident served to strengthen the security measures of the site, now let’s hope that this one too.
