If there is an award-winning driving simulator like few others and that continues to stand the test of time backed by a whole legion of followers, it is undoubtedly Richard Burns Rally. Rated as the most realistic rally simulator of all time, today it takes another step towards eternity thanks to the work of a modder who has made it natively compatible with Oculus Rift DK1 and DK2.
The mod, which you can download here, works similarly to Vireio and other wrappers, using a DLL that captures the calls of the game to Direct3D, but it is very advanced, you just have to see the characteristics of it:
- Compatible with Oculus Rift DK1 and DK2
- Full headtracking and absolute positioning support
- Correct 3D render with correct interpupillary distance
- Virtual 3D HUD
- Virtual menus
It doesn’t work in direct mode, so we’ll have to set the Rift to extended mode. By default the vertical synchronization is disabled, since the author has had latency problems, but it can be modified from the configuration file.
