The day has come. The Innovators Edition of Gear VR is already available in the United States, and in Europe it is expected at the beginning of the year, although for now there is no official date. This is the first Oculus-powered consumer product to go on sale, and it promises to provide a high-quality virtual reality experience alongside the Galaxy Note 4.
We are still at the beginnings of virtual reality, and much more if we talk about mobile devices, where power and battery life can still limit our experience, but Samsung and Oculus want to start to distance themselves from their competitors in a field that is, without a doubt, the future of virtual reality. And it is very good to use a state-of-the-art PC to enjoy a high-quality experience, but the future is mobile and in a few years it is more than likely that we will all use completely independent and autonomous devices that we can enjoy anywhere.
Gear VR and Galaxy Note 4 go hand in hand. The Super AMOLED screen of 2560×1440 pixels of the last great Samsung phone allows a higher image quality than that offered by the DK2, but the experiences must be according to the graphic power of this smartphone. Oculus and Samsung will continue to work to improve optics, distortion, weight, ergonomics, tracking and the screen.
Gear VR also kicks off the Oculus Store, a content portal from which we can download for free (for the moment) all kinds of applications, games and technological demos designed with the Oculus SDK, and in which we can meet old and dear acquaintances of the Rift, such as Dreadhalls, Titans of Space, Vanguard V and Ocean Rift among others.
Road to VR has made a complete report, with photographs of the box and the contents, and you can also take a look at the following video in which we can appreciate the handling of the Oculus Store.
