Free Steam Audio features are now available for Unreal Engine, making it easier for developers to create immersive audio experiences.
Valve it has released the first beta of Steam Audio for Unreal Engine, which comes standard with version 4.16 Preview 2 of the Epic Games engine. Steam Audio adds the sound propagation based on physics and HRTF, allowing developers to use it, totally free, to create experiences with immersive audio, compatible with any platform and virtual reality viewer. It will be necessary to boot UE4 with the flag -audiomixer to have access to the plugin, which like the Unity version, both are in beta.
Steam Audio in UE4 offers three main functions: HRTF filtering with adjustments by source, direct sound occlusion and frequency-based sound propagation. The latter being, in Valve’s words, the functionality that developers are going to be most excited about. You can find more information about each of the functionalities on the official announcement page and the complete documentation.
