Although electric cars are still more expensive than a conventional car today, we are only a couple of years away from this changing, at least according to research.
Electric cars are going up, gasoline cars are going down
According to a study conducted by scientists from the German research institute Forschungszentrum Jülich, from 2025, a medium-sized electric vehicle will be more economical than an internal combustion vehicle of the same size. The study developed a model to assess future costs in the transport sector and examined the resulting scenarios to achieve climate protection objectives.
The researchers predict that, from 2035, new gasoline or diesel cars will not be allowed to be registered in the European Union, except for those that run on electrofuels. In fact, the analysis suggests that electric mobility will become the most economical alternative in most cases in the coming years, and this trend will continue in the future.

Basically, the information that, from the middle of the 2020-2030 decade, electric variants of battery-powered vehicles will have a lower total cost of life due to advantages in maintenance costs and efficiency. The manufacturing costs of electrified powertrains will be higher than those of a conventional combustion car in 2025, but the trend will change soon after. Eventually, the production and purchase of an electric vehicle will become considerably cheaper.
The study also pointed out that vehicles with internal combustion engines can operate with zero emissions using synthetic fuels, but their energy efficiency and, therefore, operating costs, are lower compared to electric vehicles if the production of these fuels is taken into account.
In addition, it was mentioned that, although electrofuels will continue to have in the future, their need will be much lower after 2035, as an increase in the share of electric vehicles is expected, thus reducing the demand for traditional refinery products and internal combustion powertrains. So, it is feasible that internal combustion cars will continue to exist, only that they will be less viable than electric ones.
