The designers of NPO “Saturn” has received additional computing power| 25.08.2008
On Friday, August 22, company “KROK”, IBM company and NPO “Saturn” has announced that it has completed the project on creation of scientific-production Association of a new supercomputer center.
We will remind, in 2005 the design office of NPO “Saturn” for competitive work in the market of gas turbine engines has required a supercomputer. According to the company’s employees today for
successful work on the market, they must reduce the time and costs when creating new products. This requires a significant amount of engineering calculations, modelling, digital experiments, which are
reduce the number of costly trials of natural products. All require significant computing power, which was ordered “Saturn” in 2005.
Then the company “KROK”, IBM and Intel created the enterprise supercomputer based on a cluster of IBM eServer Cluster 1350, which was composed of 64 dual-processor servers IBM eServer xSeries 336 on
64-bit Intel Xeon processors and two 4-socket servers IBM eServer xSeries 455 processor-based Intel Itanium 2.
However, in 2006 the download of the computing power of this cluster is actually close to 100%. So in the middle of last year the NGO has decided that we need to create a new
supercomputer center.
General contractor of the project again became the company “KROK”, who proposed to use the IBM System Cluster 1350, which includes blade servers HS21 on the basis of Quad-core processors Intel
the joint high-speed DDR Infiniband network. The peak performance of the new supercomputer “Saturn” is 14.3 TFlops (this is approximately 20 times more than the same
index previous supercomputer). Work on the creation of this cluster was preceded by a test called the solution center of IBM in Montpellier (France). On the basis of the results obtained
was generated requirements for the new supercomputer.
For the organization of the cluster management enabled BY IBM Cluster Systems Management (CSM), and for the management of the computing tasks FOR IBM Tivoli Workload Scheduler LoadLeveler.
Also in the course of the project to implementing partners had to create NGOs in relevant engineering infrastructure: the system of uninterruptible power supply (based on APC InfraStruXure), system
precision air-conditioning, automatic gas fire extinguishing systems. They are all United, in turn, a centralized monitoring and automation.
A new supercomputer, unlike its predecessor, got its own name — “AL-100” (in honor of the founder NGOs, and designer of engines Arkhip Cradles).
The cost of the project, the company is not known.
