The Oculus Quest 2 is a pretty good VR device. In fact, for us, it’s probably best wireless mixed reality device of the market right now. And now it will be much better.
Facebook has announced that your new and improved Quest 2 model will have 128 GB of storage for the same price than the basic version currently on the market. It is now a cheaper product and easier to recommend than ever.
The move comes just after Facebook recalled the Oculus Quest 2 from the market earlier this month following complaints from skin irritation of a small number of users. The company says it would not only correct the problem by implementing a safer silicone cover, but will stop selling the 64GB Quest 2 and replace it with this 128GB model.
There is no doubt that a 128GB Quest 2 headset was already being prepared on Facebook, and it is not known whether the recall has affected previous plans for this higher capacity model to succeed the 64GB version of the device.
In any case, players will be able to get the 128 GB Quest 2 for the well-known price of $ 299 / £ 299 / A $ 479 starting on August 24. Prior to the recall, the only storage option in addition to the base model was the 256 GB variant, which will continue to be priced at $ 399.
It can’t be expanded but it’s a breakthrough
Doubling the storage capacity of Quest 2 devices is a big step. Most of the Quest titles currently occupy a 3 GB – except for some especially big ones, such as The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners, or Doom3Quest. This means that, with the original 64GB model, players could only store up to 20 titles in their glasses.
The 128GB capacity doubles that figure, but it also prepares the Oculus Quest 2 for VR games that will inevitably be larger in the near future.
This point is especially important because Quest 2 lacks expandable storage capacity. Is the only point against: the only way to get more internal storage is delete existing titles, something common on consoles like the PS4 or Xbox One.
Unfortunately, the upcoming 128GB Quest 2 also lacks expandable storage, but the extra space will make the problem more bearable.
