What is an A-Box?
In Denmark, since the beginning of the 1900s, we have had organized unions with associated unemployment funds. The A-boxes were created to ensure that those who became unemployed did not have to go for Lye and cold water, so you insured yourself by paying a monthly amount so you could get paid a smaller amount you could live for if you were to lose your job. It still works the same today, but there are far fewer members of an unemployment insurance fund than before. One of the reasons for this will probably be found in that we have far fewer of the traditional jobs, such as factory workers and unskilled labor, as many of these jobs are taken care of abroad.
Why choose an A-Box?
Since most jobs move abroad anyway, why should you choose an Unemployment Insurance Fund? The more jobs moving abroad, the greater the possibility of unemployment, especially if you are unskilled or not academically trained. Therefore, it is a good thing to secure yourself against unemployment through an Unemployment Insurance Fund, so you do not stand with your hair in the mailbox if the firing slip should have your name on it.
Likewise, it is a good idea to join an unemployment insurance fund already while you are in education, as you are not guaranteed work when you have completed your education. For many students, A-Boxes are free for the first year and they avoid the quarantine period after completion of education if they have signed up in advance. This means that they have secured an income when they graduate and can apply for a job without having to worry as much about their income.
If you do not find a job, you can always continue training.
As a salaried employee or IT employee, it is also a really good thing to be a member of an Unemployment Insurance Fund, as you are not guaranteed a job, even though you may have worked in the company for 40 years. When a new boss comes in, there is often a change of staff and if you are used to a high income, it will affect your living costs and purchasing power a lot if you are suddenly left without a job. Some unemployment insurance funds therefore offer an increased rate to special groups, so you get 80% of your salary covered.
Which A-box to choose?
This is a good question, as there are many A-boxes in Denmark and they all offer about the same. However, it may be an advantage to have an Unemployment Insurance Fund that fits the industry you work in, as they will then be able to advise the best possible about some issues. Therefore, when choosing an unemployment insurance fund, it should not be the price that is the decisive factor, as you may end up not being able to get the help and advice that is important to you in a situation where you have been fired wrongfully.
You can find an unemployment insurance fund overview at the trade magazine, which also elaborates further on the difference between an Unemployment Insurance Fund and a union, as well as the individual Unemployment Insurance Fund’s membership benefits.
