X is one of the most popular space sagas of recent years, before the arrival of the Elite titans: Dangerous and Star Citizen, and now he plans to make his first foray into virtual reality.
After the golden age of space games initiated by gems like Wing Commander and X-Wing, space simulation was relegated to almost oblivion for a few years. But in 1999 the first installment of X arrived, titled Beyond the Frontier, and it was followed by numerous titles and extensions of them with some regularity until November 2013, when the last title of the saga was released and on which this version for virtual reality is based.
Although the trailer is already more than 3 years old, it can help us to get an idea of what this space sandbox offers us that will arrive at Oculus Rift and SteamVR (HTC Vive) during the first half of 2017 in the early access mode. To this end, the game debuts a graphics engine based on the Vulkan API, and although it is based on the mechanics and contents of X Rebirth 4.0, the game expands its horizons with new missions and a new interface specific to virtual reality, which takes place completely in first person from the cockpit of the ship. The proposal of the game is very similar to that of Elite: Dangerous, since we can fight, explore and trade throughout the galaxy, although it will not have a multiplayer mode, developing all the action on our team. We hope that Egosoft will take the opportunity to launch a quality product and reconnect with its fans, who were very disappointed with the current version of X Rebirth released at the end of 2013. Undoubtedly, they will try to take advantage of the pull of virtual reality to achieve it, although it will not be easy at all fighting with the reimagined classic from Frontier Developments.
