The Oculus Quest virtual reality glasses have arrived to plant a flag inside the Virtual Reality glasses: The first family of independent Virtual Reality video game devices that it does not need a PC, console or mobile to work.
We are going to try to give a general brushstroke about what the second VR glasses of the family offer us, we are talking about the Oculus Quest 2.
Unboxing
In the box comes the Oculus Quest device, the two Touch controllers along with 2 AA batteries (for the controllers), a USB-C cable, a power adapter for the battery, and an adapter for gamers with glasses.
The total screen resolution is 3664×1920 or 1832×1920 pixels for each eye and a viewing range of 100 degrees. Oculus Quest 2 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 chipset under an Android operating system, with a 6 GB RAM memory.
As for the internal storage of the Oculus Quest it is 64GB or 256GB, depending on the version we buy.
Comfort and design
Virtual reality glasses are still glasses and this means that comfort is quite an important aspect.
To make your stay in the virtual universe as pleasant as possible, the Oculus Quest 2 have a strap system so that the load is evenly distributed over the entire head and reduce fatigue.
They also have a Adjustable IPD in a range of 58 to 68mm.
The strap and materials make it a comfortable task. We must pay attention to the pressure with which we tighten the glasses so as not to overdo it.
As for the materials of the glasses, they come with a fairly comfortable fabric coating. In addition, it has a spatial audio system included in the headband, which despite being an aspect to take into account, cannot be compared to the immersion of standard headphones.
VR without external motion sensors
As usual, Virtual Reality systems are usually accompanied by external devices for tracking movement, but in this case, no.
The way that the Oculus Quest 2 has to detect our movement is through 4 cameras incorporated in the viewfinder. These cameras, in addition to recording the position of the viewfinder in the real world, help us to know where we are when we are not playing, showing us the room we are in on the viewfinder screen.
The Touch Controllers
The Touch Controllers are the new generation of controllers for these Oculus Quest 2. They have their own position sensors, which are the hoops that give it a futuristic and attractive look.
Considering that they are the second batch of Oculus controllers, the arrangement of the buttons is a little more refined. For each controller we have 2 buttons, a joystick and a rear trigger. The controls are powered by one AA battery each.
How does the Oculus Quest 2 work?
To use the Oculus Quest for the first time we will need to have the Oculus app installed on our mobile (Android or iOS).
The start-up is an intuitive process by which we link our glasses with the WiFi network, choose the language and some more features.
Oculus Quest VR Store
Once the part of the app has been configured, the next part is to delimit the area of use already with the glasses on. This process is also quite simple, by means of which we delimit with the Touch Controllers the area in which we are going to play.
We do this process by seeing what is around us through the cameras that our VR glasses incorporate. Thanks to this, if we exceed the area that we have marked while playing, the Oculus Quest 2 will alert us not to find anything that is outside the safe space.
Once they have been set up, the only thing left is the visual interface, where we can download the applications and games, a very intuitive menu.
There is a great selection of cool games and applications for these VR glasses in the official Oculus Quest store.
Final impressions
Despite the fact that the VR glasses market is relatively young, the dynamics of its development is striking. The Oculus Quest 2 is a very interesting device.
The absence of annoying wires makes this Virtual Reality device easy to carry and use, just press the power button and you’re done.
Advantage
- Independent device
- No wires
- Quality/price ratio
Disadvantage
- The performance one step below Oculus Rift S
