Virtualization of Kubernetes Vcluster v0. 3 passes Kubernetes conformance tests

30.06.2021 Editor:
Ulrike Ostler

Loft Labs ‘ Vcluster v0.3 is the first virtual cluster software to pass 100 percent of Kubernetes compliance tests and become a certified Kubernetes distribution.

Vcluster allows engineers to create lightweight, virtual Kubernetes clusters that run within the namespaces of an underlying Kubernetes cluster. This approach reduces the spread of clusters, enables “more secure and better maintainable multitenancy,” according to the provider, and is aimed at more efficient resource sharing. This can ultimately save a lot of infrastructure costs.

Fabian Kramm, CTO of Loft Labs, explains: “Virtualizing Kubernetes is a very demanding technical problem. And passing 100 percent of all Kubernetes compliance tests and becoming certified is an additional challenge. Our goal is for virtual clusters to get as close to real clusters as possible and for users not even to notice that they are running in a virtual cluster. I like to imagine that we are trying to pass the Turing test for Kubernetes.”

Vcluster follows an earlier project called “k3v”, which was a first proof-of-concept for virtualizing Kubernetes based on the popular”K3s” distribution. Darren Shepherd, Suse Chief Architect and creator of K3s and k3v, is delighted: “It’s great to see that the Loft team has decided to base their virtual cluster implementation on K3s, a project that has been close to my heart since its inception. I see a lot of potential in virtualizing Kubernetes and believe that virtual clusters will be a key component in solving multi-tenancy challenges in Kubernetes.“

Originally, Loft had developed Vcluster as a feature as a commercial product for self-service Kubernetes development environments. In April of this year, however, software development became an independent and separate open source project. This also allows other organizations to join the virtualization of Kubernetes. Since then, Vcluster has attracted attention in the cloud native community and gained the trust of large companies and thought leaders in the field.

Note: Loft Labs is hosting the “Hands-on Introduction to Vcluster” live session today (Tuesday, June 22) at 1 p.m. Eastern Time with CEO Lukas Gentele and Rick Burroughs, Senior Developer Advocate, Loft Labs.

About Loft Labs

Loft Labs was founded in 2019. The company’s goal is to give every organization the ability to scale self-service access to Kubernetes from 10 to 10,000 engineers. Since then, Loft Labs has developed several open source projects to support it, including “DevSpace”, “Vcluster”, “jspolicy” and “kiosk”. The company’s core product, called Loft, combines these open source projects into a single Kubernetes platform that organizations can use to provide engineers with secure but unhindered access to cloud resources and make the transition to truly cloud-native engineering practices.
