Compatible with any benchtop visor, the chair uses well-known neurological methods to combat motion sickness.

Cambrian has presented the final prototype of VR Chair, a “plug-and-play” chair (emulates a gamepad) that has been designed with the aim of reducing dizziness caused by locomotion in virtual reality. The American company claims that its chair offers the feeling of presence while significantly reducing dizziness caused by movement within the virtual world.

“We realized that the lack of sense of movement in VR is the main cause of dizziness. Our VR chair is based on neurological principles known to reduce motion sickness (or “simulation disease”). The main idea is that the central nervous system can be fooled by stimulating the peripheral nervous system, ” they explain.

The chair, which places us in a vertical position and with a slight inclination, has two armrests with different buttons to perform the movements, although they can also be opened to use the movement controllers without any problem. Pressing the buttons with the fingertips generates weak signals in the area of the brain where the tactile sensations are processed, which in turn generates a noise in the brain area where the execution of the voluntary movement is processed, resulting in a weak signal of movement that, together with visual confirmation, achieves the aforementioned effects.

The different movement parameters can be configured in the software, thus being stored in the memory of the chair. The cable of the viewfinder descends through the back without getting tangled in the turns, since it is designed for 180º configurations in which we ourselves rotate the device sideways. As for its physical characteristics, VR Chair occupies one square meter, weighs 25 kg, supports 136 kg of maximum weight and supports users measuring between 1.52 and 2 meters.

As indicated, to bring VR to the masses is necessary a peripheral to solve dizziness, this being the goal pursued with VR Chair. So far they have not shared their release date, but it will cost less than $ 800 and will be compatible with any desktop viewer such as Rift, Vive, Windows MR and PSVR.
