Google has revealed that both HTC Vive and Lenovo will manufacture the first Google Daydream standalone that will arrive by the end of the year, from a design by Google and Qualcomm.

Google and Qualcomm have created a reference design for Daydream standalone viewers whose first manufacturers will be HTC Vive and Lenovo. For Qualcomm it is not something new to create reference designs, because they were already working on reference platforms whose prototypes with inside-out positioning we had the opportunity to test in the last MWC. The new devices will be based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 VR platform that includes in the reference design, the cameras and sensors necessary for Tango-based positioning technology that Google has introduced in the viewer. The collaboration between Google and Qualcomm comes back last year when they announced that the Snapdragon 820 and 821 processors would be supported by Daydream.

We work closely with Qualcomm to create a standalone viewer reference design, which our partners can use as a model to build: HTC Vive, leader in the VR space, and Lenovo, leader in mobile and computing.

It seems that later this reference design will be offered to other manufacturers.

Here’s what the HTC Vive model will look like.

And here’s the look of the Lenovo model.

Both will use a new tracking technology called WorldSense, which allows the positional tracking of the viewfinder, which means that it tracks your precise movements in space without any external sensor to be installed, which gives total freedom without cables or dependence on computers or mobiles, thanks to the power given by the Qualcomm processors of the device itself.

WorldSense gives you six degrees of freedom. What does this mean? Duck to dodge. Roll from side to side to evade enemies as they approach their position. Move forward, backward, go up, down, left or right and experience virtual reality in a whole new way.

Introducing WorldSense: move naturally in virtual reality.

HTC Vive
it is already announcing its new visor for the end of the Year, Lenovo he also announces his own.

Update on 19-05-2017

Google expects that the price that its partners will put to the standalone will be similar to those of Oculus Rift or HTC Vive
