Sony he plans to bring his virtual reality headset, PlayStation VR, to venues and arcades in Japan, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. The move would be because the market is growing slower than expected. PlayStation VR is the desktop device with the most units sold, since officially there are no figures for Rift and Vive, but Sony did share its data in February with almost 1 million devices sold. This exceeded the company’s internal expectations.
To help accelerate adoption, Sony’s strategy is to partner with salons and amusement parks, instead of setting up its own, in order to give greater visibility to the product and that users can try it before investing the money in its acquisition. Sony is not the first company with an HMD to launch such an adventure. HTC is another of the companies that are betting on this new business model, launching arcades in China. Starbreeze is also investing in it, in addition to partnering with IMAX centers.
