A division of Lenovo Data Center Group (DCG) has announced the signing of a contract for the supply of new high-performance computer for the Society for the promotion of science to them. Max Planck.

The supercomputer will be installed in the city of Garching bei münchen. Management will be the Computing and information centre of the max Planck Society (Max Planck Computing and Data Facility, MPCDF).
Deployment began in may 2020, the full commissioning of the entire system is scheduled for early 2021.

Project Lenovo provides high performance computing resources. In addition to the supply of the cooling infrastructure, hardware and SOFTWARE, the project is worth EUR 20 million also
includes the provision of operational support and comprehensive services Lenovo.

The supercomputer is equipped with the technology of liquid cooling Neptune Lenovo will provide computing power to the various institutes of the max Planck Society.

The new system will significantly increase capacity deployed in 2018, the complex high-performance computing, providing an aggregate peak performance of 12 petaflops.

It is expected that the new system Lenovo, is equipped with more than 100,000 cores and a new GPU will be capable of supporting cutting-edge research, while providing a high
energy efficiency.

The new HPC cluster is equipped with two-stage cooling system. In the first stage the main components of circuit boards are cooled directly using copper pipes
circulating fluid. On the second stand further cooled using heat exchanger based on water cooling, installed in the rear doors (Lenovo Rear Door Heat Exchanger). They
allow you to take in the liquid 100% of the so-called convective heat.

This cooling process significantly reduces energy consumption and allows the processor to work optimally. Furthermore, the concept of two-stage cooling significantly improves overall
the energy efficiency of the cooling system: the heat is not dissipated in the ambient data center air, which in turn reduces the energy demand for cooling. In addition to new servers with direct
water-cooled series Lenovo ThinkSystem used Tesla GPUs A100 from NVIDIA.

After the initial preparatory work in March, Lenovo have already started the deployment of infrastructure cooling. The commissioning of the first subsystem is planned for the summer of 2020
In early 2021 the system will be equipped with new Intel processors and NVIDIA graphics processors A100.

In addition to supplying infrastructure and equipment, Lenovo’s Data Center Group will also manage the maintenance of the cluster to provide Computing and information centre of the max Planck Society
all the necessary services under the contract.
