Finally the rumors that Oculus could be behind the purchase of Crytek have been dispelled with the confirmation that Amazon has invested a million dollars in licensing CryEngine.

The news comes from Kotaku, and in it they state that, according to the source, Amazon could have paid between 50 and 70 million dollars, which would have served to get out of the serious crisis that the company went through last summer. What is still not at all clear is what Amazon intends to do with CryEngine, it is possible that they are planning to develop their own games, although Kotaku points to other rumors that go beyond that, indicating that they could be interested in developing their own engine based on CryEngine. In any case, it seems obvious that Amazon are more than interested in video games, since at the beginning of 2014 they acquired the services of Kim Swift, designer of the classic Valve Portal, and Clint Hocking, designer of Far Cry 2.

Amazon’s support may have been an important boost for virtual reality, since Crytek announced last month that they were working on an important project related to virtual reality, with dozens of workers dedicated to it, in fact they are already working on MultiGPU support for virtual reality in their engine and on the integration of AMD’s LiquidVR SDK.
