One thinks that such a mythical and elusive object as a black hole would be very difficult to study and analyze. And although this is true, NASA continues to find ways to achieve it: this time, the organism showed us what one of these supermassive astronomical bodies sounds like.

Through Twitter, the NASA account dedicated to the explanets showed a small audio clip that allows us to hear what a black hole sounds like. In general, people think that it is impossible for sound to propagate in space, but the organism explained how it managed to make this recording:

“The misconception that there is no sound in space originates because most of space is a vacuum, which does not allow sound waves to travel. (However,) a galaxy cluster has so much gas that we have been able to pick up real sound. Here it is amplified and mixed with other data, to hear a black hole.”

The misconception that there is no sound in space originates because most space is a ~vacuum, providing no way for sound waves to travel. That galaxy cluster to which NASA refers is called Perseus, while the data comes from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory. The footage was released in May, for NASA’s Black Hole Week, and was posted on Twitter today.

NASA has carried out this task, called “sonification”, to provide sound to many elements of outer space, from the Sun to an image taken by the Hubble Telescope and up to 5000 exoplanets.
