The online Java course CodeGym has been available in Germany since January 2020 and now has 16,200 active users from Germany. The user numbers are thus between those of France (10,700 students) and Poland (24,400).

More than three quarters of those willing to learn from Germany fall into the age group between 18 and 34 years. Three quarters of Germans are male and one quarter are female. In France and Poland, the proportion of women is higher at 28.3 percent and 33 percent, respectively.

Two out of five students made the first programming experiences in the CodeGym course. 30 Percent learn programming in colleges or online courses and use the course to gain additional programming experience. A tenth of the students were at least superficially familiar with Java, for 20 percent Java is not the first programming language.

What is interesting is the students ‘ answers to the question of why they want to learn Java: 42.9 percent answered that they are studying Java to start their career as a developer. 14.3 Percent each want to reorient themselves in professional life or learn Java without a specific purpose or as a hobby. 28.6 Percent had a” different ” motivation.

When asked about the most popular learning method, 38.5 percent of German CodeGym users answered that they prefer online courses-which should explain their presence on the platform. After all, 23.1 percent of respondents prefer “self-study”, by which they probably mean learning-by-doing. Actually, this includes the 15.4 percent who prefer video tutorials or boot camps, as well as the 7.7 percent of bibliophiles who appreciate books and guides. In the end, however, success also depends on the right mix of learning methods, emphasizes CodeGym.
