An interesting accessory arrives on Kickstarter to replace the foam of the current Oculus Rift, both DK1 and DK2. About Face is a coating that ensures greater comfort for the user of an Oculus Rift, but also greater hygiene in the face of several users using the same HMD, especially if we bring friends home to blow them away with some demonstration.
We already know that the foam of our Oculus Rift can stain and deteriorate with use and with the sweat of the skin, a situation that can increase if we use some movement device such as an Omni or Virtualizer, on those morning walks through the forests of Skyrim. Well, About Face solves the problem with two products, one designed for our particular use and the other to offer demos to other users:
- Type M: two-layer microfiber coating that adapts to the contour of our face that offers us a soft and pleasant to the touch contact surface. The coating can be easily removed and we can wash it without problems.
- Type H: intended especially for those who perform demos frequently and their Oculus Rift is used by many people, it contains a waterproof outer layer that can be cleaned with alcohol or with other substances every time a person uses it.
The installation is done by removing the foam from the Oculus Rift, DK1 or DK2 (a very simple process that does not invalidate the warranty) and placing a bracket in its place. This support is on which the coating that will be in contact with our face is attached, so that we can put it on and take it off whenever we want, to wash it or to replace it with the other, in the event that we buy one of each.
The campaign ends on October 29 and has already exceeded its goal on the first day. We can get the M or H model for $ 32, or take advantage of the early bird offer (still available) and receive one of each for $ 36 (you have to add $ 8 shipping costs). The units will be shipped in December and, as we have mentioned, they are compatible with DK1 and DK2, although logically we do not know if we will be able to use them in the commercial version when the time comes.
