One of the most important technological developments in recent years is that of touch panels for screens. And although they work very well for cell phones or tablets, it does not mean that they are for everything. For example, people don’t love car screens, so Volkswagen will return to physical buttons.
Physical buttons are coming back to Volkswagen
According to Autocar, Volkswagen is making changes to its interior design by reintroducing physical buttons instead of just using touch buttons inside the screens. The prototype of the upcoming ID compact electric vehicle.2all of the brand, was seen at the Volkswagen City Studio in Copenhagen and has a larger number of physical buttons, and this is a direct response to customer complaints. Darius Watola, VW interior designer, mentioned that the company is responding to customer requests, especially in Europe.

The decision to reintroduce physical buttons comes after previous criticism of touchscreen-centric designs, especially on models such as the Golf Mk8 and the ID.3. At the time, the head of Volkswagen, Thomas Schäfer, admitted that the previous design had negatively affected the loyalty of customers, who did not like the toatl dependence on the display. Therefore, the interior of the ID.2all now includes a row of backlit buttons to control functions such as air conditioning and a rotary dial to control the display. The touch buttons are now reduced to controlling the entertainment system.
There will still be digital displays, such as on the dashboard
In addition to the design changes, Volkswagen is looking to implement a transition towards more sustainable materials in the interior, eliminating hard plastic, leather, chrome and glue. In addition, we know that the vehicle will have a 223-horsepower engine, will be able to reach from 0 to 100 km in 7 seconds and will have an estimated range of 450 km. It is expected to have a cost of $25,000 USD and will arrive in Europe in 2025.
