The first public demo for Oculus Rift DK2 of Caffeine, a first-person psychological horror game set on a space station in a distant solar system, is now available. The game runs under Unreal Engine 4 and the demo uses the latest version of it today, 4.4.1. Anyone who has not had the opportunity to try the previous demos, can already get an idea of the atmosphere of the game.
The previous demos for DK2 suffered from the problems that Unreal Engine 4 had at that time, but according to the author the performance must have improved noticeably, as he comments in the release notes:
- Notable performance improvement when implementing streaming at the levels
- Various improvements to the physics-based object interaction system
- Based on Unreal Engine 4.4.1 (full support for Oculus Rift DK2)
- In-game graphics settings
- Fixed the problem when bending over
- A few more brushstrokes of history to discover
- Some other surprise
Interestingly, the author is still waiting to receive his DK2, so the implementation has been done a little blindly. He claims that once he receives it he will further improve the performance of the game. From what we have read, even users with high-end graphics have had problems reaching 75 frames per second, although everyone seems to have liked the atmosphere. You can download it here for Windows and Linux.
Caffeine is looking for the green light on Steam, if you like it you can vote it on Greenlight. We leave you with the latest available trailer of the game.
